Update Theme and Plugins from Zip File

Description

DEPRECATED: As of WP v5.5 this plugins functionality is included in WP Core and this plugin is not required anymore. If you are running WP v5.5 or greater, you can de-activate and delete/remove this plugin. This plugin will still continue work fine with versions of WordPress less than v5.5.

WordPress will let you install a NEW plugin or theme from a zip file, but it does NOT allow you to upgrade them from a zip file. If you try to upgrade from a zip file, you will get an error message that says «destination already exists» and the upgrade will fail. WordPress will not allow you to upgrade from a zip file.

Update Theme and Plugins from Zip File will allow you to easily upgrade from a zip file, avoiding the «destination already exists» error message.

There is also an option to create a backup copy of the old plugin or theme, in case there is a problem with the new version.

How do I upgrade a theme from a Zip file?

  1. Make sure this plugin is installed and activated.
  2. Download zip file of your theme’s most recent version.
  3. Log in to WordPress as and Admin and go to Appearance > Themes.
  4. Click on the ADD NEW button.
  5. Click on the UPLOAD THEME button.
  6. Click BROWSE and choose your zip file you downloaded.
  7. Click the INSTALL NOW button.

With the WP 5.5 update, this functionality will be part of the WordPress core. I just wanted to say thank you very much for building this plugin. It's been incredibly useful. From the 5.5 notes: "If updating plugins and themes manually is your thing, now that’s easier too — just upload a ZIP file."

Hidden gem

This plugin unobtrusively performed a task that should have been part of core WordPress a long time back. A very well-made plugin that "just works" and has made life so much easier. The upcoming WordPress 5.5 release will be adding this functionality natively, and so it is likely this plugin will see fewer installs or use going forward. Many thanks to the author for their efforts!
